Normally I warn people not to have their subjects bang up against the edges of the frame – like their feet or heads, for example. When stuff gets too close it can feel forced and create unwanted tension. But in this case, he’s been stuffed into the frame to accentuate just how tall he’s become. He’s even been tilted a little bit to squeeze him in. That is to say, there’s a thoughtful appropriate tension here. Yes, there is such a thing. Beautiful portrait.
