When I teach, I try to remember what's most important in the lives of my students. Exposure and composition are merely building blocks for the visual poet that is inside of all of us.

Share yourself.

When you photograph your beautiful granddaughter you are making a couple of different statements. First, your granddaughter is beautiful and nothing in the world compares (Unless, of course, you have several grandchildren.)

Secondly, you love all your grandchildren. Pictures of your grandchildren say a lot about you.

But the poetic side of photography needs reinforcement. It needs someone on your side guiding the way. That's where I come in. Could you learn this by yourself? Yes, you could. It's been done countless times. But having a mentor gets you to that place you want to be so much quicker. That's where I come in. I am that voice in the back of your head. I am another set of eyes.

This course is unlike any course I’ve ever taught.

It’s a comprehensive photography course with the iPhone at its center. Yes, it’s about the bells and whistles on an iPhone, but it’s much more than that.

It will help you to be a better photographer with any camera, not just your iPhone. And it will help you do it all with sensitivity, humor, and humanity. Again, that’s the heart part.

The world is a big place full of cracks and crevices containing wonderful photographs, all of them waiting for you and your camera. I intend to open you up to the possibility of photographing parts of the world that you’ve barely noticed, much less photographed. Then you can share your vision of that world using the most wonderful sharing machine ever made, the iPhone.

I always come back to sharing, because that’s really what it’s all about.

I’m going to use a variety of tools to teach the curriculum.

- Dozens of short super informative and entertaining videos about photography in general.
-
Dozens of how-to-videos about the specifics of an iPhone.
-
Office hours with a live human being and iPhone expert, course instructor Nick Kelsh.
-
Dozens of editing tutorials using the photographs of Nick and students, befores and afters. All edited on the iPhone.

Of course I’m going to get a little bit technical. Photography, after all, is. When you embrace iPhone’s technology it can be a language of love. I'll say that again. When you embrace the technology it can become a language of love.

Repetition is important to good teaching. I do it all the time. The trick is to recognize the repetition when it happens. For example, the lessons you learn from photographing and editing a picture of a mountain also apply to a newborn baby. You just need to be able to recognize the similarities and patterns and understand why they work for both subjects.

And finally, we want to keep reminding you of how thinking visually and getting comfortable with your pocket sized camera connects you with your life, the lives of people you love, and a very large, beautiful world.

That’s the heart part.

How the course works

How to Photograph Your World with Your iPhone and Your Heart is for all photographers who want to embrace a wonderfully enriching experience with one of the most amazing pieces of technology ever invented, the iPhone.

This 4 week interactive course is a series of online videos (50), accompanying PDFs (50), and bi-weekly zoom meetings to help anyone interested in making their photographs everything they can be and were meant to be. Nick will also make weekly short videos using still photographs from our private iPhone Facebook page. He will use student photographs as jumping off points for teaching various iPhone lessons.

Zoom meetings happen on Tuesday at 1 PM eastern time and Friday at 1 PM in eastern time. The Tuesday meeting will be limited to a discussion of the iPhone camera. The Friday meeting will be general "Office Hours" with Nick for all course students.

Zoom sessions are offered as extras and are not mandatory, so don't stress if they don't align with your schedule. All Zoom sessions will be recorded and accessible in the private Facebook group.

In case you're unable to attend a session but have questions for Nick, you can submit them beforehand for discussion during the Zoom sessions or in the Facebook group. The private Facebook group serves as the space for Nick and students to engage, share assignment photos, ask questions, receive feedback, and provide support.

The idea that you have a camera small enough to be with you all the time and pick it up to shoot photographs that look like this is revolutionary in the history of photography. Then, on top of that, make it the best learning/teaching camera ever and we have a party on our hands.

Connect with the world...

Mastering the techniques of the great masters and combining those skills with one of the great pieces of technology ever created can connect you with a world you've never seen before and has always been there.

and the people you love...

You photograph them, you share with them, you inspire them with the way you see the world. Photography is the language of love that very few people speak fluently. You can and will.

using the miraculous camera...

When you are alone in nature with just you and your iPhone you have an opportunity to connect with creation in a way nothing else can. It’s downright spiritual but you need to know how to use your phone.

to save it all forever.

This is a simple way of presenting yourself to the world, and preserving your spirit in perpetuity. That’s right, I said it. This is how you can live forever.

Good iPhone photographer = Good photographer

I will walk you through the bells and whistles of the iPhone and show you how they relate to various situations and subjects in your life. Some of them you will find useless. But some of them will transform the way you take pictures. When you master the ones that work for you and your life, you are well on your way.

Find new ways to see the world.

There are many photographers that think the back of someone’s head makes for a bad photograph. Then again there are lots of great photographers that know the back of someone's head can be a real grabber. It just depends on how you see the world.
