Should you shoot horizontal or vertical photos?

It really is a basic and profound question in photography. Should I shoot a horizontal or should I shoot a vertical? Every situation is different, of course. And what you have in your mind in terms of composition often dictates what you end up doing—horizontal or vertical. (I cover all aspects of composition in my new iPhone photography course.)

The iPhone comes with an extra bit of baggage. It is so comfortable to hold it in your hand in a vertical position. I see parents and relatives of athletes at football games and basketball games shooting vertical videos simply because they don’t feel like turning the camera over on its side to shoot a much more appropriate horizontal. (I just had to get that off my chest! 🙂

If nothing else, I’m sure THIS video is going to raise your awareness of the horizontal/vertical question just a little bit more and that’s a good thing. It’s something you need to consider every single time you take a photograph.

If it makes you feel any better, back in the old days, the single lens reflex days, everybody shot horizontals all the time because they were too lazy to turn the camera over on its side to shoot a vertical. Human beings are funny.

Watch the video above to learn all about it.

(And if you want to learn even more about taking great iPhone photos I’ve got a new iPhone photography course coming up that’s going to be great fun!)
