Nick Kelsh’s

Fall Foliage Photography Workshop:

“Autumn in the Catskills”

October 3-6, 2023

Walton, NY

With an optional add-on experience to make a 4 Day Workshop:

Historic Cooperstown
Photo Tour/Workshop

October 7, 2023

It’s about you, your camera, the season, and the stories of your life.

The shared experience of a Nick Kelsh Photography Workshop will feed your photographic soul…

I went to the fall foliage workshop just wanting to have fun with other photographers, enjoy a chance to play with my camera, and figure out a few difficulties I had technically. I got that and so much more. So when Nick says it will re-energize your passion and build your confidence, it is NO EXAGGERATION!!!!! And it is loads of fun to boot!!!! (I hope to see y’all at another workshop down the road!) A workshop with Nick is not only a learning experience, but one where we laughed and shared our love for photography while building friendships in the process! I get emotional every time I look at the photos. Trying to find the words to capture the weekend and explain it to friends and family… “Awesome” and “amazing” and “wonderful” repeated over and over and over is pretty much what I’ve come up with so far. I think this is a case where I’ll have to let my photos speak for themselves! Nick and his wife Anne are as kind and fun as they seem online…even more so in person, I do believe! I hope to be able to attend once again! One of the attendees described it as a “once in a lifetime experience that I hope happens more than just once”— a perfect description of how I feel!

Terryl Hicks, Louisiana

Nick Kelsh, totally from the heart, the (country) photography workshop was really perfect for me… exactly what I needed and what I expected.  I was honored to be there, and would love to do it again.  Thank you so much for taking the time to top off our weekend with all that discussion and analysis in the post-workshop webinar session. It was the perfect way to review all the great times we had and the things we learned, along with tons of editing advice. It was fabulous, you are fabulous, Anne is fabulous. Thank you so much for everything. I am aching to do it all again. And I hope you (and ALL my new photographer-friends!) will come to Boston one of these days soon. I want more!!!”   🙂    🙂    🙂

Cindy Ringer, Massachusetts

Wow, Nick! Thanks for the incredible workshop! I was the newbie of the group, having just discovered your teachings a few months before the workshop. I still hadn’t had time to finish a single class.  I took a chance and dove headfirst into an amazing experience. I was definitely the least experienced photographer there. And walked away with skills I will use the rest of my life. And friends. I’m forever grateful to be a part of your first photography workshop. Thanks from the bottom of my heart. I’m no longer just a mom who likes to take pictures. I’m a photographer!”

Cynthia Barclay, Ohio

An exclusive invitation to a place I love

My family and I love autumn weekends in the pastoral farm country of New York’s Western Catskill Mountains. I fell in love with this part of the country at Anne’s family home one Thanksgiving when I first met Anne—and after visiting frequently throughout our twenty years living in Philadelphia, we moved our family here permanently in 2019. I am now delighted to call the Catskills home.

So many of my favorite photographs that you’ve seen me post are from this gorgeous area. All the seasons are so beautiful here and I’ve loved photographing every one. But when we chose a date for our wedding, it had to be autumn. The Catskills are famous for their stunning fall foliage.

So we couldn’t have felt luckier to discover a perfect location for a photography workshop there, high on a hill with gorgeous vistas, rolling meadows, multiple ponds, a cozy farmhouse and spectacular old barn.

We’re excited to invite you to join us in this idyllic spot—at this perfect time—for a truly special experience… a classic autumn country getaway (picture it: crisp air, golden fields, jewel-toned leaves, apple trees, farmers markets, pumpkin patches, seasonal meals from local harvests) combined with an intimate, intensive, personalized, hands-on photography workshop. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn from my lifetime of shooting photographs, while visiting one of our country’s notable vacation areas.

You’ll be inspired, be challenged, photograph, eat, play, relax, explore, grow, bond and, I predict, above all else, be absolutely thrilled with how it will change your photography.

You’ll gain the skills and confidence to take control of your camera. You’ll enjoy a memorable getaway and return home with those memories beautifully captured in the kind of photographs you’ve always dreamed of shooting. The kind that you’ll now be comfortable shooting consistently – photographs that will enrich your life and the lives of those you love and those you photograph.

.

The Western Catskill Mountains

A distant relative of mine came to visit a couple of years ago. He was retired and he and his wife were on a two-year, 50-state marathon driving vacation. I asked them—now having seen our beautiful nation as few people ever do—where in the United States they would settle.

They talked it over and without even knowing where my wife had grown up they said that it could very well be the Catskill Mountains area of New York State—the location of our photography workshop. It’s a selection difficult to argue with. I’ve been shooting photographs here for years now and posting them on our Facebook page.  People have been wowed by the light, drawn in by the details of Americana, and have used the words “Norman Rockwell” dozens of times to describe the pictures that I’ve taken there. (I love Norman Rockwell, by the way.)

The place just feels real. The people are real. It feels like America. The rolling hills are incredibly beautiful in all seasons but autumn is truly unforgettable. I absolutely guarantee that all of the attendees will fall in love with this beautiful part of the northeastern United States, just as Anne did growing up here and I have since.

(When we hosted our first summer workshop in the area a few years ago one of the attendees fell in love with it and bought a property that weekend. True story.)

“Whoever has made a voyage up the Hudson must remember the Kaatskill mountains. They are a dismembered branch of the great Appalachian family, and are seen away to the west of the river, swelling up to a noble height, and lording it over the surrounding country. Every change of season, every change of weather, indeed, every hour of the day, produces some change in the magical hues and shapes of these mountains . . .

When the weather is fair and settled, they are clothed in blue and purple, and print their bold outlines on the clear evenening sky; but sometimes, when the rest of the landscape is cloudless, they will gather a hood of gray vapors about their summits, which, in the last rays of the setting sun, will glow and light up like a crown of glory.”

– Rip Van Winkle, Washington Irving, 1819.

Our Venue with Amazing Views

Nestled in the Western Catskill Mountains atop a beautiful hill

on hundreds of secluded, stunningly beautiful acres, well off the beaten track,

is an intimate property, private and peaceful.

Many have said it’s a magical place.

.

MORGAN POND FARM

Head up the shady dirt road about a mile, enjoying the glowing golds and reds of turning leaves. Go slowly. You don’t want to miss spotting a deer or wild turkey or pea hen or a sleepy possum. The road deadends at the top of the hill, with a classic farmhouse on the left and a historic 1880s barn on the right.

Morgan Pond Farm is a sanctuary to celebrate a slower life. The property has been lovingly cared for over 50 years since dairy operations ceased, with the owners planting thousands of trees, building five ponds, managing the wood lots for timber and wildlife and, most importantly, making it a special place to be with friends and family…and fellow photographers!

Located in the heart of the Catskills with wide-open vista views and features thoughtfully appointed rooms to ensure a comfortable stay and plenty of outdoor spaces to slow down, enjoy the fresh air, and beautiful ponds, and take a break from your busy lives and enjoy and photograph all that nature offers.

It’s a 200 acre photographic playground classic farmhouse and historic barn against a backdrop of autumn colors, waving grasses and wildflowers, crystal clear ponds, and scenic trails throughout the fields and woods.

Our workshop will take advantage of the many various photographic possibilities on this beautiful property.

We’ll also shoot in various locations around surrounding towns, on nearby farms, and scenic local spots including historic covered bridges, classic red barns, Catskills landscapes, grazing livestock, pumpkin fields, farmers markets, and plenty of rural Americana.

And of course we’ll do our best—with luck from Mother Nature!—to show you the optimum spots for viewing and photographing the fall foliage that has made this region famous.

Click through the photos below to get a feel for the place!

Why spend this time with me?

Very simply, you want to shoot beautiful photographs. Maybe you have a fancy expensive camera that you’ve never taken full advantage of. You’d love to confidently shoot in manual mode and you’ve decided you’re finally going to crack the proper exposure “code.”

You aspire to professional looking photos with out-of-focus backgrounds, the beautiful soft focus of bokeh lights, or the blur of motion captured, but think you could never do that!  Or maybe you can already do that but you want to free your imagination to explore your artistic side, using the amazing creative controls your manual settings offer.

And you’ve always wanted to dedicate time away from your daily distractions to your passion, this hobby you love. Getting together for a few days with like-minded photographers who share your enthusiasm for this miraclous medium sounds like heaven.

I can help you. This workshop is for you. No question.

I’ve hosted hundreds of seminars, retreats, public speaking events, webinars, and written and/or photographed nine books and I’ve come to the conclusion that the small group over a period of days may very well be the perfect teaching and learning format. There’s enough time for me to connect with every student personally and still give you time to be alone with your cameras and exercise your mind’s eye—in other words, shoot great photographs.

For me personally, these workshops could possibly be the most exciting thing I’ve ever done in my career.  A list of the great photographic experiences of my life would have to include some of these workshops. They were thrilling, and I’m incredibly proud that the attendees have repeatedly asked when we can do it again – and have come back for subsequent workshops!

Yes, we’re going to make sure you’re secure in knowing how to use your camera in manual mode but I want more than that for you. I want you to think like a photographer. I want you to think in terms of photographic communication—I want you to tap into your inner storyteller. I want you to create images—during the workshop and beyond—that will enrich your life and the lives of the people you love.

I want to help you get there. And I want you to have good old-fashioned fun doing it.

Oh, and one more thing…

I guarantee you’ll leave a better photographer.

But don’t just take my word for it…

See what others have said below:

My workshops are nothing, if not fun!

Below are some moments from various events I’ve done.

Nick Kelsh is a renowned photographer—with nine published books and repeat appearances on OPRAH and THE TODAY SHOW—who has become a photo-guru and friend to many thousands of family memory keepers and photographers of all levels. Nick’s passion for teaching and helping others, knack for creatively delivering photography instruction in easily digestible bites, and inspiring, entertaining style make learning photography easy and fun on his How To Photograph Your Life website, blog and Facebook page, and in his popular online courses, live workshops and speaking engagements.

Here’s What You Get:

A three-day, three-night immersive photography workshop in the farm country of beautiful Delaware County, NY—at or near the peak foliage season.

We’ll kick off the event with a welcome dinner and introductory photo slideshow and discussion on Tuesday evening.  Take advantage of your Free Bonus Session by coming early on Tuesday for your personalized, one-on-one camera settings checkup with Nick.  The first 6 people to register will be guaranteed an individual session, and other sessions will be “first come, first served” (individual or small group by camera brand) as time allows.

We’ll then spend the next days diving into lessons, assignments, photo shoots, reviews/critiques and editing. As always with photography, we’ll be working on mastering or reviewing your camera settings, lighting, composition, and many other specialized techniques and general tips. We’ll shoot in various locations around the property and nearby farms, and a variety of scenic local spots which could include animals, people, barns, machinery, birds, flowers, landscapes and plenty of rural Americana.

Our schedule will include both lessons/discussions and in-the-field training.  We’re going to do our best to find optimum spots in the vicinity—not to mention optimum time of day and light conditions (calling all earlybirds!)—for viewing and photographing the fall foliage that has made this region famous.  We’ll build in flexibility to adjust for whatever current weather, lighting and foliage conditions the weekend brings.

Oh, and of course, we’ll give you some free time to hang out, relax, and avail yourself of all the property offers.

You’ll leave refreshed and re-energized, full of delicious local harvest meals; with deeper photographic knowledge and skills; wonderful new photo-friends, a collection of photographs you’ll be proud of, and the confidence, creativity and control of your camera to consistently capture the photos you’ve always dreamed of shooting.

My Fall Foliage Photography Workshop is a magical three-day event that will:

  • Give you the confidence and skills to control your camera creatively in the daily situations that make for great photographs.
  • Improve your understanding of various lighting situations and techniques, ability to expose photographs properly, compositional thinking, storytelling tactics and your post-processing and editing skills.
  • Establish new ways of thinking about your photography and the way you take pictures. It will help you not just relax but empower you…and it all shows up in your pictures.
  • Make you aware of just what makes photographs that work…and photographs that don’t. You’ll be guided by me and enjoy the support and feedback from a diverse group of photographers who share your passion.
  • Give you a heart, head, and photo album filled with wonderful memories of a unique autumn rural experience shared with what are surely to become lifetime friends. This is guaranteed to be unforgettable.

PRE- WORKSHOP PREPARATION

Before the workshop begins you’ll be asked to upload a set of ten photographs to give us a sense of who you are and where you are in your photographic journey. It could be a picture of your family and then your photographic greatest hits and/or mistakes! I’ll review these with you in a private consultation call before the workshop and then we’ll share them with the group in our opening night presentation, as we get to know each other and all share our photographic achievements, challenges, and goals.

MASTERING MANUAL MODE

We welcome a diversity of experience and skill levels among attendees. I know that we’ll have students attending this workshop who could probably teach significant portions of it. On the other hand, we’ll have people with expensive cameras who lack the understanding of how to take full advantage of all the bells and whistles.

To level the playing field, I want to make sure that all attendees are relatively comfortable with their camera settings before we get to Wednesday morning.  If anyone who’s attending wants to get on the phone with me before the weekend, I will be happy to walk you through your settings.

You’ll be asked to watch (or review) my 60-minute “F-stops, Shutter Speeds, and ISO Made Easy” training in advance of the workshop.

Also, I will be available on location during the day on Tuesday, October 10th, for anyone who wants to be among the first to arrive so that I can sit down one-on-one with you to demystify your camera settings. A basic knowledge of the exposure triangle and a rough understanding of how to take a light reading is going to go a long way here. Time for these one-on-one sessions is limited, so register and arrive early to take advantage of this bonus.

On the other hand, for some students, coming to grips with their cameras settings over the course of the workshop may be the huge personal milestone they’ve been dreaming of. It’s all good, believe me. My point is this: I want to help you before the workshop really gets going so we can maximize our time shooting photographs and telling stories.

STORYTELLING

We shoot photographs to tell stories so we will spend time addressing this all important topic.

We’ll talk about the how to tell a story in a single image and how to shoot a collection of images that tell a story.

We’ll focus on shooting photographs during this workshop that tell stories in a personal way…your way. I want you to go home with a set of pictures that was taken by a specific personality—you. That’s, after all, what good storytelling is all about; it’s the way the story is told and not the story itself.

I want your pictures to say something about how you feel about the world and the people you’re with. That attitude is going to result in the very best family photos when you get home.

And we’ll discuss the difficult but necessary task of choosing which images to keep and which to delete. We’ll discuss how cropping, editing, and converting to black and white (or not) can enhance your photos and the storyline.

Storytelling with a camera is an art and you will not leave the workshop having mastered it, believe me. But your ability to be a visual communicator will grow and flourish.

Essentially, we’re all going to photograph the same barns, trees, landscapes, people and views but, as all great storytellers know, the story is in the telling.  This is a profound lesson to learn as a photographer.

It’s not about being self-centered, it’s actually the opposite. It’s about sharing your vision with the world. It’s what we photographers do.

FOLLOW UP VIDEO AND VIDEO RECORDING

A couple of weeks or so after the workshop we’ll have a followup session via webinar for a final overview of the experience, review of your photos and editing lessons.

You’ll be asked to evaluate and edit your collection of photographs during the week following the workshop and submit a sample of them for my review with the group. We’ll discuss content, technique, composition, and storytelling and I’ll demonstrate editing techniques in Lightroom.

You’ll receive a recording of this session to download for review as needed—and as a keepsake of the group’s greatest hits and our shared experiences together during this memorable workshop.

WHO IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR?

Very simply, this workshop is for anyone who wants to become a better photographer. Photographers of all levels are welcome. Probably the most satisfying experience will be had by owners of an SLR or DSLR camera, as you want to be able to manually adjust your f-stops, shutter speed and ISO settings. Having said that, if you want to do this workshop with only a smartphone camera, I would welcome that challenge (as long as you wouldn’t mind all the discussion of manual photography) – that could be a wonderful photographic experience for sure. I will try to make the challenge for each participant personal and appropriate to their level and interest.

Due to the challenges presented by a location at a higher altitude (Santa Fe sits at 7,000 feet above sea level) and the walking/hiking it may entail, we recommend that attendees have a moderate fitness level and mobility.

WHAT IS THE COVID POLICY?

All participants must be fully vaccinated (including boosters, in accordance with the CDC definition of fully vaccinated at the time of the workshop). We are excited to be back out doing in-person workshops again but the health and safety of our staff and attendees will always be our first priority.

Covid protections and requirements are subject to change depending on the current circumstances at the time o the workshop. Masking and social distancing will be required as deemed necessary by CDC and local government guidelines and recommendations at that time.

Travel Insurance is recommended. (If you’re looking for travel insurance with protections for a wide range of travel emergencies and trip interruptions including those due to Covid-19, check out SquareMouth.

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE COST?

The workshop fee includes:

  • Three-day photography workshop with hands-on instruction, assignments, photo review, and editing instruction
  • Skype consultation & photo review with Nick prior to the workshop

WHAT IS THE HOUSING SITUATION AND HOW ARE ROOMS RESERVED?

In Santa Fe, we will be headquartered in the lovely historic Elliot Barker House just a short stroll from the famed Santa Fe Plaza.

For those attendees choosing to include the Add-On Day experience at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, we will be staying at the Albuquerque Marriott Pyramid North.  Rooms in both locations will be reserved through us.  As we will be attending both the morning and evening sessions of the Balloon Fiesta, we will stay at the Marriott both Friday and Saturday nights.

Roooms choices will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.  Prices will range from approximately $140 – $325, depending on room selection and single/double occupancy.

Workshop registrants will receive detailed pricing and reservation information after registering for the workshop.  For double-occupancy rooms, let us know if you have a roommate request – otherwise you’ll be assigned a roommate.  Limited rooms are available at the house, but over

CAN I ROOM WITH A FRIEND?

Yes! We’ll appreciate you sharing accommodations with friends or fellow participants, as most rooms will need to be booked on a double occupancy basis. Rooms will be booked first come, first serve, so if you and a friend register for the workshop at the same time, you’ll be able to book a room together. After you register for the workshop, you’ll be invited to join our private Facebook group for attendees, and you can find a roommate there if you don’t already know one. If you don’t book with someone you know and do not choose a private room, you’ll be assigned a roommate if available … a great way to make new photo-friends!

CAN I BRING A SPOUSE OR OTHER TRAVEL COMPANION?

Yes, absolutely! It’s great to take advantage of such an opportunity to share such a trip.

We realize, though, that many of you will be looking forward to focusing on yourself and your photography during the workshop—and bonding with fellow participants—so we will all, of course, respect that as the goal of our group. However, traveling companions will certainly be welcome to join us for meals and touring activities as space allows.

To bring a guest simply add the appropriate Workshop Guest Package option to your cart at checkout:

3-Day Workshop Guest Package is $395

4-Day Workshop Guest Package is $495

Guest Registration Package covers the same meals/admission fees/transportation as workshop attendees—but does not include any participation in photography instruction sessions.

WHAT ABOUT MEALS?

Tuesday’s welcome dinner, daily beakfasts, and a closing meal on Friday are provided.  Other meals are at your own expense—feel free to go out on your own, or you’re welcome to join Anne and me in a group.

WILL I HAVE ACCESS TO WIFI?

Yes, there will be high speed WiFi access in the Santa Fe house and the Marriott Albuquerque Hotel.

WHERE DO I FLY INTO AND HOW DO I GET TO THE LOCATION FROM THE AIRPORT?

Your airport options are the Santa Fe Municipal Airport or the Albuquerque International Sunport.  If you are participating in the Add-On Option of the Balloon Fiesta, you will want to fly out of Albuquerque at the end of the event.  You can find information about ground transportation from Albuquerque to Santa Fe on the airport’s website.  You may also be able to share rides with other attendees and organize those arrangements through our private attendee Facebook group.

WHAT ABOUT LOCAL TRANSPORTATION?

You will be responsible for getting yourself to and from the airport to the workshop, but we will arrange for all other local transportation for the group during the workshop.

WHAT IF I HAVE SPECIAL NEEDS?

Please let us know if you have any special dietary or mobility needs.  IMPORTANT NOTE:  Santa Fe is located at a height of 7000 feet, and we will likely be doing some walking along trails.  Therefore, we recommend that participants have a moderate fitness level.  You can email Workshop Coordinator Terryl Hicks at [email protected], or let us know if you’d like a phone call to discuss how to accommodate any concerns.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?

Bring your camera and all the lenses you may want to use. If you have a tripod—and it’s not a hassle to bring—bring it. (Many folks in the past have brought their tripods and ended up not using them. It’s your call. It’s NOT mandatory. However, they are helpful for photographing during the evening session of the Balloon Fiesta.) If you own a detachable “speedlight” you can bring that, too.  (Although, again, past participants have ended up not using them, so you decide.) And, of course, chargers, portable batteries, a flash drive.

When you pack your equipment for our photo-tours, try to keep yourself light and mobile. Your choice of camera bag is important. There will be some walking involved — and for the most part you’ll be using your camera and whatever lenses you own.

Bring your laptop for post-processing your photos. We will do some editing work onsite during the workshop. I use Lightroom for editing and I’m going to suggest you do, too. If you plan to use Lightroom it would be good to have it installed before you get there.  If you need help learning to use it before the workshop, here’s a course I recommend: https://www.howtophotographyourlife.com/product/how-to-edit-photos-self-study/

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I PACK?

Comfortable walking shoes are mandatory.

Bring layers to adjust for varying degrees of cold or warm. A raincoat (which we hope you won’t need!) Rain/sun hat. Jacket or coat for nights. You may want to look half way decent for eating in a big city restaurant, but certainly relaxed casual. Average temperatures for that time of year in Santa Fe are mid-60’s-70’s days / 40’s nights—but anything can happen weather-wise these days!

Keep in mind that you could end up in photos taken by me or others throughout the weekend (which I may share in my blog or facebook page), so keep that in mind—seasonal city clothes, avoid t-shirts with logos, etc.

*And for the bonus portrait sessions, remember to bring whatever clothes you want to be photographed in. If you’re wondering what’s best to wear for that, ask yourself what you want these photos for… a nice personal photo for your family or social media? A business headshot for your work?  With your camera for your photography page? Just dress accordingly. In terms of colors, black isn’t great, bright white is the worst and solid colors are always the safest way to go.

WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE?

Of course we hope it will be picture-perfect but we have to be prepared that anything can happen weather-wise. (Our itinerary will be flexible to accommodate weather and light and we will shift outdooor/indoor shoots accordingly.)    Santa Fe’s weather can change rapidly and often. Average temperatures in Santa Fe in October are highs in the mid-60’s to 70’s, and lows in the 40’s/high 30’s.

A good weather service to check for greatest accuracy is AccuWeather (http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/santa-fe-nm/87501/october-weather/329558)

And a good app to download to your smartphone is: https://darksky.net/app/ Dark Sky is the most accurate source of hyperlocal weather information. With down-to-the-minute forecasts, you’ll know exactly when the rain will start or stop, right where you’re standing.

WHAT IS THE CANCELLATION POLICY?

Your workshop fee is fully refundable for 72 hours following your registration. This will allow you to secure your spot—to take advantage of the discount and special bonus—but be risk-free, with time afterward to be sure you can get travel arrangements in place. (Please contact us at [email protected] if you’d like help with arrangements.)

WHAT IF WE DON'T GET TO SEE THE BALLOONS FLY WHILE WE ARE AT THE BALLOON FIESTA?

Our visit will include both the morning and afternoon sessions on Saturday, to give us the best chance to see – and photograph – the inflations, ascensions and glows of the balloons. Please note that we cannot guarantee that balloons will inflate and/or fly during the times we are at the Balloon Fiesta, as inflations and launches are determined by the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta and are subject to wind and weather conditions and other factors beyond our control. The fireworks show is also subject to the same conditions.  While our photography day with Nick will end Saturday evening, you may choose to extend your stay and return to the Balloon Fiesta for additional sessions on subsequent days – however, those accommodations and excursions will be at your own expense, as they are not included as part of the workshop’s Add-On Day.

WHAT IF I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS?

Please email our workshop coordinator Terryl Hicks at [email protected], and we’ll be happy to address any questions you may have by computer or phone.  We can offer advice about transportation, rooming and other logistics to help make the trip manageable, affordable and possible for you
