We are pleased to announce a new, fully updated and interactive version of Nick Kelsh’s much beloved Editing in Lightroom course. Yes, as in our previous course, we’ll take on photo editing in Lightroom top to bottom through easy to digest (and easy to rewatch) short videos. The videos will be all new content reflecting the current version of Lightroom with all the most recent features.
When possible (which will be most of the time) the example and assigment photos will be photos submitted by the students. This way the pictures will be real world and real life. They will look like something you just might shoot. In fact, they could just be photos you actually shot.
During the entire four weeks we’ll concentrate on the the nuts and bolts of Lightroom and the artistic, creative side which the nut and bolts open up and is really why we’re all here in the first place.
First, we'll teach you the photo management part—importing, storing, naming, folders, collections, selects, tagging, metadata, etc.. So you'll understand how it all works and be able to easily search for, manage and share your photos.
The for the editing part, we'll start by learning how to assess your photos straight out of the camera, how to evaluate them to know what needs editing and why, in order to make them look the way they did in your minds eye when you shot them, or to enhance them once you see them, or to create a particular look or effect to add power or artistry.
And then of course we'll learn the actual tools and techniques of photo-editing, including exposure, contrast, curves, retouching, etc,
Here's what you can expect with Nick Kelsh's mastering composition course:
Plan to discover the profound difference between taking a photograph and creating an image that moves people to their core.
It lies in the power of composition.
Think about those rare photographs that stop people in their tracks. The ones that command attention, stir emotions, and linger in memory long after the viewer has turned away. These images weren't accidents. They were carefully crafted through the deliberate arrangement of visual elements – each line, shape, and shadow purposefully placed to create maximum impact.
This is what masterful composition achieves:
- It guides the eye on an intentional journey through your frame
- It creates visual tension that holds viewers spellbound
- It transforms simple scenes into powerful visual statements
- It brings order to chaos, finding beauty in complexity
- It gives your images a voice when words fall short
Every time you look through your viewfinder, you're faced with countless compositional choices. Each decision you make – where to place your subject, how to use the light, what to include or exclude from your frame – shapes not just how your image looks, but how it feels.
In this course, we'll explore:
- How to create compositions that command attention
- Ways to build visual pathways that lead to emotional payoffs
- Techniques for using space and scale to create impact
- Methods for turning ordinary scenes into extraordinary images
- The art of knowing exactly what to include – and what to leave out
This isn't just about following rules or memorizing patterns. It's about developing an intuitive understanding of visual power. About knowing how to arrange the elements in your frame so they don't just exist – they resonate.
Because when you master composition, something magical happens. Your images stop being just pictures and start becoming experiences. They don't just show – they speak.
4 WEEKLY MODULES:
The Setup / Editing Basics
At first glance the Lightroom interface appears to be a little bit complicated. I'll show you tricks for simplifying it and then move right to the basics of editing which is after all where the fun is. We'll learn the best use of your monitor space, all important key commands, and talk about streamlined work flows
Importing and Organizing
Creating a system that allows you to quickly access your photographs and save them is key to your photographic happiness. How do you get photos into Lightroom? Where do you put them when you do? How do you name and tag them? How do you find them later? We teach you all of that.
Editing and Developing
This is where we talk about judgment and learning what to change and what not to change. It can be tricky. You don't want to go overboard, but you want to do everything you can. There are so many great tools in the latest version of LR, not the least of which is the fabulous ability to select subjects and backgrounds It's a total dealbreaker.
Sharing the Love
This is where it all happens. Learn to express yourself with your camera and then finally with your ability to polish the image and touch the people you care about. Sure, there's plenty of technical obstacles to overcome but they are minor compared to the payoff you will learn here. We teach sizing of images, methods for sharing, slide shows, and printing.

"I highly recommend ANY online course taught by Nick Kelsh. I've taken many online classes that cost less, BUT, I have to say Nick's were by far the best. I guess you get what you pay for. He is a skilled teacher and I love his use of humor in getting his message across. Take advantage of his "sales/specials" that's what I do to make them more affordable. I would not hesitate taking any online photo course from Nick."

This 4 week interactive course is a series of online videos and interactive resources to help anyone interested in making their photographs everything they were meant to be.
In our new interactive course we’re adding a key component…students will participate fully in a private Facebook group with Nick and fellow classmates. The facebook group is set up as a learning group with lots of new interactive features, plus "Guides" to organize course content and assignments, and hashtog organization making it easy to find all posts on the same topic.
Each Monday begins a new module, with new topic lessons posted in the form of videos with written components, a discussion board, assignments and the facebook gallery to upload your assignment photos. Nick will post comments and provide valuable feedback on your assignment posts and you'll benefit from the input of your classmates as well. You’ll also get a quiz to test your grasp of the topics with a video review, including the answers, from Nick.
There will be two live meetings with Nick per week. On Wednesdays, he'll host a weekly webinar class demonstrating editing philosophies and techniques, and reviewing student assignments from the previous week. AND he'll also host casual weekly “office hours” zoom sessions later in the week to answer any questions or address any problems you might hit along the way. Don't worry, all live sessions will be recorded and available to watch any time, so you'll never miss a thing.
Don’t worry about “making class”; each video and all of the resources are designed to be self-paced within the framework of the 4 week syllabus. Ideally, most participants will want to work on the material during the week it’s posted, as that will provide the most beneficial interaction with Nick and classmates. However, if your schedule doesn’t allow that, you can always catch up at your own pace and you will have full lifetime access to the videos and course resources.
And if the live group sessions aren't enough, Nick is always willing to get on the phone with anyone who might feel like they’re floundering during the course. He has actually saved a few photographic lives by talking students in from the edge of the photographic cliff. Nobody leaves Nick's class until everybody is well on their way to moving up the photo editing food chain.
It's the interaction with real people, specifically instructor Nick Kelsh, but also fellow photography-loving classmates. We have two live Zoom sessions per week and share photos and discussion in a private class Facebook group. One of the best parts of an interactive course is that we'll be able to use student photos as examples to teach and reinforce the techniques so you'll have real life editing help with some of your own photos.
Want This Extra Interactive Experience With Me?
I hope so! Join us in MASTERING COMPOSITION to benefit from learning in our interactive environment!
The big questions with photo editing have always been and will always be:
What should I do to this photograph that will enhance my original vision without distracting from it?
How can I remove annoying details without me and my photograph looking silly?
How can I direct my viewer's eyes without seeming manipulative. In other words, how can I stay true to myself and reality?
How can I make this image speak honestly and with heart using light as the medium?
.........................................................................
You can create better photos and I can help you do it. But photography can seem complicated. So it has to be fun AND heartfelt. That's where I come in.
I've had all kinds of experiences as a photographer but the most satisfying thing I've done is help people like you take pictures and then take those photographs to the next level in editing.
I know that Lightroom courses on the internet are widely varied in quality and approach, but my students tell me I make mine clear and inspiring. I certainly do my best to make it fun, which is actually easy for me because Lightroom is a photographic blast.
